Rohit Sharma asserted that he has not retired from cricket but rather opted out of a single test match due to poor form. He emphasized, “I am not leaving the game; I have simply stepped down for this particular Test.”

Addressing the concerns surrounding his decision, Rohit mentioned, “Considering the current form of our batting lineup, it was crucial not to carry players struggling with form. This thought process led me to take a break from the ongoing Sydney Test.”

The seasoned cricketer highlighted the support and understanding extended by the team management and selectors towards his choice.

Rohit expressed the internal conflict he faced in making this decision and acknowledged the backing he received from the coach and selectors. “The team management trusted my judgment based on my years of experience in the game,” he added.

Shubman Gill replaced Rohit in the playing eleven for the decisive Border-Gavaskar Trophy match, as India currently trails 1-2 against Australia.

Reflecting on his challenging stint in Test cricket during 2024, Rohit’s performance dipped with only 619 runs in 26 innings across 14 matches at an average of 24.76.

Prior to withdrawing, he struggled to make an impact in this series with just 31 runs across five innings in three Tests after joining the squad post the Perth Test.
